EU carbon rules, explained monthly

What’s in an issue

Four short parts, about five minutes of reading. Below is a sample issue, with a note on what each part is for.

Hi, This month: CBAM’s new 50‑tonne threshold, two CBAM dates for your 2027 calendar, and how to start Scope 3 without waiting for supplier data.
One rule change a month in plain language: who it affects and what to do about it.

CBAM now has a 50‑tonne threshold. Are you still in scope?

Since the 2025 simplification, importers whose CBAM goods add up to 50 tonnes or less in a calendar year are exempt from declarations and certificates. Electricity and hydrogen don’t count towards the threshold and stay in scope. If you expect to go over it, you need authorised CBAM declarant status before you do.

Two CBAM dates for your 2027 calendar

CBAM certificates go on sale on the EU’s common central platform.
First annual CBAM declaration, covering 2026 imports, and the first certificate surrender.
One practical guide from our team, usually something you can apply the same week.

Start Scope 3 with the invoices you already have

You don’t need supplier data to begin. Spend-based estimates from your accounting data show where the hotspots are; then improve the data only where it matters most.
